Google Settles Click-Fraud Class Action

Search Engine Watch reported that Google has agreed to pay approximately $90million into a fund to settle a click-fraud based class-action suit brought against it by Lanes Gifts and Collectibles.

A few hours later, Google confirmed the story with this post to its blog.

The settlement, which still has to be approved and detailed by a judge, is still being kept confidential but we do know that any refund will involve advertising credits and not cash. As the statement on the Google blog reads, “This agreement covers all advertisers who claim to have been charged but not reimbursed for invalid clicks dating from 2002 when we launched our “cost per click” advertising program through the date the settlement is approved by the judge.”

Google acknowledged that invalid clicks might be charged against an advertisers account but claims that most tend to be caught by filters. It offers advertisers more information at the AdWords Help Center’s Invalid Clicks page.
