Google Reveals Its Achilles Heel(s)

In an act of honesty and openness, Google has released a statement naming the chief problems it faces. There is a brief description of each predicament, and how or why it poses a threat. Google fans need not worry – the company isn’t falling on its sword just yet.

As reported by Donna Bogatin in a ZDNet blog, the number one issue facing the search engine giant is that it “May Have Difficulty Scaling and Adapting Our Existing Architecture to Accommodate Increased Traffic and Technology Advances or Changing Business Requirements.” This could result in “the Loss of Users, Advertisers and Google Network Members, and Cause Us to Incur Expenses to Make Architectural Changes.”

The company also noted that it depends on “Bandwidth Providers, Data Centers or Other Third Parties for Key Aspects of the Process of Providing Products and Services to Our Users, and Any Failure or Interruption in the Services and Products Provided by These Third Parties Could Harm Our Ability to Operate Our Business and Damage Our Reputation.”

With number three, Google admits to being wary of ad-blocking software. “Most of our revenues are derived from fees paid to us by advertisers in connection with the display of ads on Web pages. As a result, ad-blocking technology could, in the future, adversely affect our operating results.”

The other five issues are identified and explained in Bogatin’s post. Google is doing well to be so up-front about its weaknesses. One should note, however, that these aren’t failings – many other healthy companies face the same issues. Google is just being honest with itself, and with us.
