Google Page Creator Closed By Demand

Only a few hours after news of Google Page Creator made the rounds, including appearances on Digg and Slashdot, Google has closed the service to new account requests.

Google Page Creator has suffered the same problem that its free Analytics product did when it launched. Enthusiastic demand from Googlites with Gmail accounts proved too much for Google, and accessing Page Creator now means joining a waiting list and checking for an invitation.

Now an attempt to register for Page Creator returns an error message:

Thank you for your interest in Google Page Creator! Google Page Creator has experienced extremely strong demand, and, as a result, we have temporarily limited the number of new signups as we increase capacity. In the meantime, please submit your email address and we will notify you as soon as we are ready to add new accounts. Thank you for your patience.
Speculation has already arisen that this happens not out of demand, but control. It is possible that Google wishes to admit a certain number of users to a service like Page Creator or Analytics, then watch them to see how they use the service and make adjustments on the fly.

Then, after certain prudent and necessary fixes have been made, the invitations would go out to people on the waiting list. Google could observe how well their tweaks scale, make more changes as needed, and eventually open the registration process up to more users.
