The search appliances from Google have moved with the times, as the company boosts their capacity to meet the demand of their enterprise customers.
Google announced it will offer two more models of the Google Mini. The existing Mini can handle 100,000 documents and is priced at $2,995. Though the new Minis look like the current model, Google can deliver them in either a 200,000 document configuration for $5,995 or 300,000 documents for $8,995.
Customers who own the present Mini model can purchase more capacity and upgrade to either the 200,000 or 300,000 document capacities now offered.
January 12th was the one-year anniversary for the device; “to celebrate we thought we’d announce a few more of them,” product manager Rajen Sheth wrote on the Google blog.
When the Mini first debuted in 2005, it had a 50,000 document capacity and a price tag of $4,995. Three months later Google upped the capacity and dropped the price, and business has been “beyond what we’d imagined,” Sheth told IntranetJournal.
Google will have to sell a lot of Minis to make significant impact on its bottom line. The Minis represent part of the tiny percentage of Google’s revenue stream that does not come from advertising. Contextual advertising delivers about 99 percent of Google’s revenue, a figure that gives some industry observers reason for concern.
