Google Leans On “Old” Blogger Users

Some people are creatures of habit; others are just the tiniest bit afraid of new things. Those who use old versions of Google’s Blogger may soon have to embrace some changes, though – Google is going to start, in an entirely non-evil way, forcing them to switch to the new version.

Jordan, “your friendly Blogger employee,” made a post in the Blogger Help Group announcing the change. “[A] small percentage of users who log in to an old Blogger account will be required to move to the new version,” he wrote.

But suppose you really, really don’t want to make the switch? Too bad. “If you’re one of the lucky folks who is prompted to move your account over to the new version of Blogger,” Jordan continued, “you’ll be able to postpone this process once (and only once) if you *really* need to get a post out of your head or want to say goodbye to the old Blogger. After that, it’s time to befriend the new Blogger!”

Ionut Alex. Chitu wasn’t exactly thrilled by this development (Chitu also gets a hat tip for unearthing Jordan’s post). “I really don’t understand why Blogger team needs to make a big deal out of this switch,” he wrote. “Blogger could have switched the accounts automatically, as the new version is backwards-compatible and the visible differences aren’t significant.”

Other onlookers (and especially other affected users) may become even less polite. Forced changes never go over too well, and it is just strange that Google would enact this sort of “phased compliance.” Oh, well – ready or not, here the new Blogger comes.
