Google Hears Music So You Can See It

Those content deals Google inked with Warner Music Group and Sony BMG have been quickly turned into a free, ad-supported content respository on Google Video for music fans.

It looks like Google will use its video site to test what many expect it to do with its YouTube purchase – mate ads with videos to monetize that traffic.

We will give Google Video team member Jason Liebman half-marks for his post on the Official Google blog regarding the jamming good times. Red Hot Chili Peppers and Justin Timberlake…let’s just say one of these things is not like the other:

As you might guess, we think free is always better, so we’ve just announced major partnerships with two of the world’s largest music companies — Sony BMG and Warner Music Group — to bring thousands of music videos to Google Video via free, ad-supported on-demand streams. And as per our recent announcement with MTV, in the coming months our AdSense partners can put all these great videos on their sites as well.
That last part indicates members of the Google AdSense network will be able to carry ad-supported videos, instead of just video ads as have been tested previously by Google. The promise of content should make those video ads more compelling than just a straightforward sales pitch to the always-desirable younger demographic.

Next up will be seeing how Google allows its AdWords clients and AdSense partners to select videos for their purposes. Despite Google’s democratization of the advertising process, it is a little hard to believe the honchos at Sony BMG or Warner Music would be content to settle for anything less than a premium rate for ads placed with their top artist videos.

Also, it remains to be seen if AdSense Network members will be able to filter videos by artist or genre. A website that deals in goods like conservative political-themed bumper stickers and t-shirts may not appreciate having a Dixie Chicks video appear online and upset their customers.
