Google, Gore And Current TV

Today saw the launch of CurrentTV, a hip new television network put spearheaded by former Vice-President and Senator Al Gore. So what does that have to do with the world of search? Well Google is right in the middle of the whole thing.

Gore, an instrumental player in the development of the Internet when he was a Senator, put out this hip new offering (Al Gore hip?) and one of the programs is called Google Current. The program will discuss a lot of the current popular search topics. How far they will go in this makes one wonder a bit, particularly this being Al Gore’s network.

In many cases, the most popular searches tend to center around attractive celebrity women in the news. According the Zeitgeist, the top 10 gaining queries were Nicole Narain (she’s the Playboy Centerfold in the video with Colin Farrell), Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee (who had their own video), Emma Watson (Hermione of Harry Potter fame), Colin Farrell, MegaMillions, John Roberts, Laguna Beach, Courtney Love, Sienna Miller, Edith Clement. Three of the 10 involved adult videos and Playboy centerfolds alone. It will be quite interesting to see if they really talk about the those topics with any depth at all.

Google will be providing the information but it’s up to the powers that be at CurrentTV just how they will handle the seemingly adult topics that constantly appear at the tops of search lists. Al Gore and his wife Tipper were quite vocal back in the 80s with regard to rating music albums for content. Well, the content here is no adult and since the new network is aimed at youth, it will be interesting to see how the handle the new Google CurrentTV.
