After Gartner Research published the opinion that Google Desktop users in a business setting should use the Enterprise version of the product, Google released an updated edition of that product.
The Google Desktop 3 for Enterprise beta became available recently, with several administrative features designed to address corporate concerns about using the product. Many fields have to obey legal requirements, such as Sarbanes-Oxley or HIPAA, and ensure the security and privacy of the data they hold.
Matthew Glotzbach of Google posted more about how the search advertising company addressed those concerns. He detailed some of the new features and changes in the product:
This product has all the features of the consumer version — and then some. It also includes full administrative control. Administrators can use the standard group policy settings to completely disable product features, such as the Search Across Computer functionality, so users cannot send documents from the work computer to their home PC.
In addition, Enterprise customers have asked for some features we’ve now added. These features include the ability to set time-based document retention policies for different content types, and a policy to control the indexing load on your Exchange servers.
The Search Across Computers feature looked like it could draw attention when version 3 of Google Desktop launched. It did, as the Electronic Frontier Foundation and other writers raised the alarm over the feature. Google has met those concerns for the enterprise; consumers who have worries about the product should not enable Search Across Computers for their systems.
