Google recently updated some of the Javascript fetched every time a page using Google Analytics is loaded.
The new code is slowing down all matter of websites running Analytics. This WebMasterWorld thread (via Digg) has some angry site owners complaining about the slow-loading code preventing their pages from loading. Even Slashdot is suffering.
One poster pasted this message from Google:
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are aware that many users have experienced delays in their site due to a new update to the Google Analytics javascript file. Our engineers are currently working to resolve this issue. We appreciate your patience in the meantime.
If the issue is not resolved for you by Monday, please feel free to follow-up on this email, and I can give you an update on when a solution will be in place
I’ve noticed a lot of analytics software slowing down websites. Opera very specifically lists all the servers being contacted in the status area, so I’m always aware who’s slowing down my blog, and others. If its a temporary thing, fine, I’ll live, but if any analytics code becomes a consistent problem, I just drop it. Done it before, certainly. And I won’t be the only one. There’s no investment lost by dumping the free Google Analytics, and the QA people (if there are any) need to keep that in mind.
