Getting Our Priorities Straight

Tuesday this week my son was playing in the district championship baseball game. It started at 7:30pm. My intention was to finish up with a late client I had coming in a little after 7pm, pack up my stuff and head out to the ball park.

As I was getting ready to leave, I took a second to look at our main sales page. I can’t really tell you why I looked at it–I don’t usually do that before I leave–but on Tuesday I did.

That’s when I had a crisis.

It seems the JavaScripts that place the headline on the page and the prices in the body of the sales letter were not working properly. I instantly knew what was wrong–we had accidentally loaded an incomplete page instead of the page we had intended to. And my son’s ball game was going to start in five minutes–the exact amount of time it takes me to drive from the office to the field.

I left.

I figured that anybody who saw our page that night would be a little perplexed, and that I would probably lose a sale or two, but I would rather lose a sale than have my son think that work was more important than his game.

Wednesday morning I returned to the office. As I was going through the emails I found one with the subject “How much does it cost?” I chuckled to myself before I read the email because I knew exactly why it had come.

Sometimes we get so caught up in building a business that we forget WHY we are building a business. The reason that I work for myself is so that I can go to ball games, so that I can have time for family, so that I can provide a lifestyle that is just a touch better than average for my family.

Don’t lose sight of what is really important today.
