Firefox Gets Blogging Extension

Nick Wilson and Jed Brown at Performancing built a Firefox extension that launches a blog entry editor and publishes to Blogger, Moveable Type, or WordPress from within the browser.

Performancing has placed a number of advertisements online in sites like Technorati, seeking bloggers for their network. Now they’ve made an extension available to turn the browser of choice for many bloggers into an instant blog editor.

Performancing for Firefox adds to the browser like any other extension. The filesize is only about 143kb, and works for Firefox 1.5 and up (so there’s an excuse to upgrade if you haven’t already.) Once in place, clicking on the pencil-and-notepad icon in the bottom right of Firefox launches the extension.

The editor splits the browser window and takes the bottom half of it. In this release, content can be dragged and dropped from the browser into the editor. Formatted text given the drag-and-drop treatment retains its formatting after the drop.

Currently the extension can be launched in a new tab or window by right-clicking the pencil icon, but drag-and-drop isn’t supported with that yet, Wilson wrote.

Feedback from commentors at Performancing has been virtually unanimous in its approval of the editor. One user even found that drag-and-drop worked with formatted tables.

Wilson also posted that the del.icio.us API and Technorati “page info” functionality are on their to-do list for the extension.
