The latest trophies from Fox Interactive Media’s (FIM) shopping spree are online karaoke joint kSolo.com and social media/topical news/ content aggregator thingie Newroo Inc. Yes, I used the word “thingie.” It’s Monday.
Fox describes Newroo as “an intelligent tool that scans the web and finds the most releveant information for users from thousands of websites, enabling them to easily create their own websites by aggregating and remixing content from third-party websites and blogs.”
See, it’s a thingie.
TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington says, “Newroo is ultimately addressing the same market as Memeorandum. However, they have a number of squidoo-like features (this is meant as a compliment) to allow anyone to create their own topic-based version of the main service.”
Newroo was founded four years ago by Brown University alumni Daniel Gould and Brian Norgard, who apparently, according to the press release, speak in unison.
“We were attracted to Fox Interactive Media because they quickly grasped our vision to provide web users with a powerful tool set to create decentralized vertical content websites around people’s passions and interests,” added Dan Gould and Brian Norgard, Co-founders of Newroo.
They forgot to mention to the 8×10 framed portraits of large piles of cash Fox showed them. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Maybe as an impulse buy, Fox picked up kSolo.com on the way to the check out. Specializing in online karaoke, kSolo lets users sing and record their karaoke performances and torture everyone they know by emailing them a digital copy. It’s just like regular drunken karaoke, except you get drunk after they sing. (Somebody get Leno on the line. That was a good one.)
“We are excited to bring both our technology and music community to the Fox Interactive Media family of web companies. We look forward to working with them to build the next generation of online music experiences for consumers,” said Nimrod Lev, Founder and CEO of kSolo.com, who then belted out a heartfelt rendition of “Wind Beneath My Wings.”
FIM’s Ross Levinsohn indicated that we’re likely to see more of the same:
“Fox Interactive Media’s acquisitions of Newroo and kSolo demonstrate our commitment to empowering users with interesting tools that they can use to further enhance their online experience and online identity,” said Levinsohn. “The acquisitions further validate FIM’s ability to unearth early stage, technically savvy web 2.0 companies led by entrepreneurial, forward-thinking management teams.”
