Yahoo’s recovering – sort of – from the slide that led Microsoft to make its offer. Layoffs, layoffs, and more layoffs were part of its path to improvement, though, so it’s nice to hear that at least some former Yahoo employees aren’t exactly wandering the streets.
Advertising guys (and girls) are quite popular in parts of California, according to Michael Learmonth’s sources. Learmonth reports, “Brock Purpura, CEO of online ad network Etology, says there are Yahoos a-plenty in the marketplace – but they’re not cheap. . . . . Purpura’s planning to open a New York office in June in hopes hiring will be easier here than in the Valley.”
He later adds, “The upshot: experienced ad execs are can expect to pull down $200k-$250k.” And the lower end of that range is still 2.5 times the median household income in Sunnyvale. The upper end is about 3.1 times what the average Sunnyvale household earns every year.
Things might not work out so well for everybody, of course, which (inflation issues aside) is too bad. Yet Yahoo, despite its problems, placed second in a lot of contests; other companies should realize that its ex-employees are bound to be decent.
If nothing else, former Yahoos might be able to find work at Google; it seems like there are more and more openings in Mountain View.
