The book “Mastering EJB 3.0” is in its fourth edition and may be freely downloaded along with its Enterprise JavaBeans source code examples.
Wiley Publishing has made its “Mastering EJB 3.0” book available as a PDF download from The Server Side enterprise Java community website. Users must be logged in to the site, and can sign up for a free membership to gain access to the book.
According to the site, more than 50 percent of the material in the fourth edition is either new or has been revised by the authors: Rima Patel Sriganesh, Gerald Brose, and Micah Silverman.
This includes the use of annotations instead of deployment descriptors, security-related annotations for authentication, and concepts behind Java Persistence API-defined entities. The authors also comment on improving EJB performance, and advise on best practices for design and deployment, the site noted.
The 721-page PDF has been broken down into three distinct parts. Part I: Overview discusses what has come before, like EJB 2.1, and an introduction to the EJB developer’s new friend, the EJB 3.0 Simplified API.
In Part II: The Triad of Beans and Entities, the authors introduce the reader to Session Beans. They also begin to cover Java Persistence, and programming with entities. For fans of web services, EJB 3.0 makes the process of building them a more flexible and simpler task.
Part III: Advanced Enterprise JavaBeans Concepts, delves into the authors’ expertise on the new platform. Security topics, like those for web services and web applications, have a dedicated chapter.
Details on advanced Persistence concepts and performance optimization, among others, lead into the final chapter on integrating EJBs and Java EE to construct a complete application.
