Imagine you and your friends having your own private slumber party at New York City’s trendy Tribeca Grand Hotel.
Or cruising around town on a pink Vespa scooter signed by Ashton Kutcher and dozens of other celebrities. These items and other one-of-a-kind products and experiences are currently up for bid on eBay. The listings are part of eBay’s Spotlight on a Cause campaign to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Spotlight on a Cause, now in its fifth year, enables eBay community members, nonprofit organizations and corporations to use the eBay marketplace to raise money for breast cancer research. Since 2000, more than $400,000 has been raised through items sold through eBay in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
eBay users can log on to bid on hundreds of items donated by celebrities and notables, nonprofit organizations, national companies and eBay community members, all of which will benefit various breast cancer charities.
Here is a sampling of items being listed for sale:
— SELF Magazine is offering luxury products and once-in-a-lifetime Hollywood experiences like a Miramax Star Treatment Weekend in Hollywood, watches and jewelry from Gucci, Mikimoto and Me&Ro, roundtrip airline tickets from JetBlue and Song, a slumber party at the Tribeca Grand Hotel in New York City, and many other exciting items at a wide range of prices. All proceeds will benefit the Young Survival Coalition (listings run September 21-October 21).
— Sutter Home Family Vineyards will list a pink Vespa scooter signed by more than 50 celebrities, including Charlize Theron, Ashton Kutcher and Drew Barrymore. Originally signed and listed for sale by Ellen Degeneres on The Ellen Show, Sutter Home purchased the scooter and is now relisting to benefit the Sutter Home for Hope campaign for breast cancer, along with the original beneficiary Peace Games (October 4-October 14).
— The Meredith Corporation will list more than 500 handmade quilts, framed quilt blocks and quilt block kits created by hundreds of volunteers, including designers, quilt groups, quilt guilds and quilt shops. Each quilt contains 10 inch pink and white blocks that were submitted by American Patchwork and Quilting magazine readers from every state in United States and throughout the world. Proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (October 4-December 31).
— The Breast Cancer Fund will list 15 items, including an all-expense-paid trip to the 2005 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, CA, as a member of the Luna Women’s Mountain Bike Team, and ISIS athletic performance apparel (October 8-October 18).
— Quilted Northern and ABC’s The View will list the “Quilts of Inspiration” breast cancer awareness quilt, comprised of quilt blocks created by people across the country, as well as many celebrities such as Wynonna Judd, Susan Sarandon and Rosanna Arquette, that provide messages of hope and support. Proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (October 26-November 5).
The eBay community is also getting involved as groups of users join together in a grassroots effort to raise money for breast cancer research. Below are just a few examples:
— More than 250 eBay designers and sellers will join eBay seller two_peas_and_a_princess to list high-end designer and handmade children’s clothing and other fashion items. Last year more than 200 people participated in the listings, raising more than $12,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the American Cancer Society. This year proceeds will be donated to a number of organizations, including the Avon Foundation, the American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation (October 11-October 24).
— A group of more than 60 female eBay PowerSellers are aiming to set the world record for the largest online auction-style listing of Barbie memorabilia by listing more than 1,600 Barbie dolls and accessories dating from 1960-2004, including Barbie furniture, cases, houses and clothing. Highlights of the lot include a rare Barbie #4 Ponytail, which debuted in 1960, and the first Barbie Dream House, with matching furnishings. Proceeds will benefit Gilda’s Club (October 14-24).
“eBay’s Spotlight on a Cause campaign is a great platform for individuals, nonprofits and national companies alike to reach our vast community of users who are eager to support this worthy cause,” said Kristin Cunningham, senior manager, eBay Giving Works.
eBay Giving Works is the dedicated program for charity listings on eBay. To date, more than $35 million has been raised for nonprofits through the eBay marketplace. With the introduction of eBay Giving Works, individuals are now able to support their favorite causes by listings items to sell on eBay and donating all or a percentage of the final sale proceeds.
