After much speculation and rumor, it appears the Sunnyvale portal powerhouse called Yahoo is becoming even more trendy and purchasing Del.icio.us. The announcement showed up on the del.icio.us blog earlier today.

A hat tip goes to TechCrunch for posting this news on their blog. They had an IM conversaion with Joshua Schachter, founder of Del.icio.us.

The announcement comes as the various portals and search engines continue to scramble about, getting the leading edge. One thing that makes this interesting is that it comes on the heels of the SES: Chicago conference, where rumors were surely abound.

This was on the del.icio.us blog:

We’re proud to announce that del.icio.us has joined the Yahoo! family. Together we’ll continue to improve how people discover, remember and share on the Internet, with a big emphasis on the power of community. We’re excited to be working with the Yahoo! Search team – they definitely get social systems and their potential to change the web. (We’re also excited to be joining our fraternal twin Flickr!)

We want to thank everyone who has helped us along the way – our employees, our great investors and advisors, and especially our users. We still want to get your feedback, and we look forward to bringing you new features and more servers in the future.

I look forward to continuing my vision of social and community memory, and taking it to the next level with the del.icio.us community and Yahoo!

As many will say, this makes a great addition to Yahoo, especially since they already own Flickr. As these companies work to expand their horizons, Yahoo has been keeping a strong pace despite being parked by Google in the search engine side and not getting quite the attention as the discussion of the MSN/AOL speculation. Yahoo keep going their merry way, hanging onto visitors, making tons of money from all it’s revenue streams. In the end, this may be the real company to watch.
