AMD has the processor market seeing double as vendors begin falling over each other to pick up the new Opteron.
“All aboard!” said AMD as it released the hotly anticipated Opteron series dual-core processor. And who has tickets for this bullet train?

IBM committed to the 200 series for its IBM eServer and IntelliStation product lines, and will be shipping the A Pro 6217 IntelliStation in June. The Opteron 275 based Pro 6217 will include the latest version of PCI Express, x16 2D/3D graphics. In addition, IBM eServer 326 high performance 1U server line will also be expanded to include the AMD Opteron dual-core processors.
HP is launching its 4-processor BL45p blade and 4-processor DL585, which supports 1.8 and 2.2GHz dual-core processors, 1GHz HyperTransport, and PC2700 and PC3200 memory.
Sun Microsystems will transform its x64 product line beginning with its Sun Fire V40z server. Available in May, the V40z is easily upgraded from single core to dual core.
VIA Technologies announced support with its K8 series of core-logic chipsets, including the new VIA K8T890, which uses VIA Hyper8 technology for high-speed performance.
And finally, Cray supercomputers announced that Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors would be an available option for its Cray XD1 supercomputers and would also be supported by Cray XT3 supercomputers.
AMD says that the new processors can deliver up to a 90 per cent performance improvement for application servers over single-core AMD Opteron processors. And from the look of the big names lining up to put Opteron in use, it appears to be true.
