CNet Re-Launches MP3.com

MP3.com was relaunched today by CNet.com. The site, instead of offering users the ability to purchase or downloads mp3s, is now more of a resource/search engine for music lovers.

CNet says that MP3.com is a “resource dedicated to helping people find the best of everything. MP3.com is designed to fill this void, putting music fans at the center of the universe of digital music content, where they can instantly find what they need.”

The hope is that MP3.com becomes the leading resource for people who are searching for information related to music. MP3.com gives users the ability to search either artists or albums. There is also navigation tabs that break the site down into genre sections.

“The launch of MP3.com is an important milestone for the music industry,” said Vince Broady, senior vice president of CNET Networks’ games and entertainment business. “Consumers have never before had such an easy, intuitive way to navigate the rich, diverse world of legal music content, technologies, and services.”

Besides a comprehensive catalog featuring artist and albums across 700 music genres, MP3.com also features a directory of sites where music is legally distributed. Another feature is Musicvine, a “music discovery engine” that helps music lovers find new artists by finding similarities to their favorites in a unique visual interface.

A tech guide is also available to visitors of the site. This guide offers visitors relevant information on the technology available to music fans, including descriptions of each major portable player, music service, and software.
