ClaimID: A Personal PR Firm?

ClaimID is a service that lets you manage the information that is linked to you online. The service boasts that users can influence the search engines, and provide more relevant information when others submit search queries for their specific names.

Have you ever tried to find an old friend through one of the search engines and discovered that there are 4,387 people in the United States alone that all share your long lost pal’s name?

Or perhaps you are interviewing for a job and your prospective employer decides to Google you. What sort of information do you expect will be associated with your name?

The truth of the matter is that search engines have no way of determining which “Joan Q. Public” that is most relevant to a search query. ClaimID, however, is a service that is looking to change this trend of ambiguity in search results, giving users the ability to manage their online identities.

So how does one manage his or her online identity? I decided that I would try to service for myself in an effort to find out. Registering for the site was extremely simple, which was a relief as I am not one of those people who relishes the idea of going through a fourteen-step verification process.

So, on to identity management, one of the site’s major features lies in link aggregation. So, in searching for my name, I can specify which links are actually related to me, and which are not. With a name like Joe Lewis, I’m sure one can only imagine the sheer volume of information I come across when searching for my own name, very little of which actually can be linked back to me.

Adding links is a relatively painless process, again a checkmark in the positive column. The jury is still out on whether or not the site actually backs up its claim of being able to exert contextual influence on search engines. The service will have to undergo much more strenuous testing before a conclusion can be drawn in that regard.

Until then, you can check out my ClaimID profile here, with updates coming very soon.
