Chris Sacca Quitting Google

Chris Sacca was no Vanessa Fox – do a search for him within murdok, and you’ll find just five articles in which he’s mentioned.  Sacca will mirror Fox in at least one way, however, as he’s leaving Google at the end of this month.

Chris Sacca Sacca, Google’s Head of Special Initiatives, may have gotten tired of dealing with Verizon and various spectrum issues.  He’ll now do a bit of angel investing, possibly in cooperation with Ev Williams (of Twitter fame) and Paul Graham (of Y Combinator).

Matt Marshall, who noted those relationships, also guessed at what gave Sacca his big reason to leave: money.  Like many Googlers, it would seem that the Head of Special Initiatives simply got rich enough to do whatever he wanted, and he’s now following a non-search interest.

Still, unlike some other recent departures, we’re not sure that Google is going to be too broken up about this one.  Valleywag has routinely insulted Sacca’s (lack of) ability and drive, and today Owen Thomas remarked, “That Google planned to hire a ‘director of other’ who would engage in similar pointless visioneering while outranking Sacca was almost certainly his formal cue to leave.”

Oh, well.  It will, at least, be interesting to see if Sacca’s angel investing ever brings him back into Google’s path.
