It has been said that people don’t have attitudes, their attitudes have them. We tend to agree. Attitudes grow and develop out of what we have ‘learned to believe’ about the world around us, all its components and constituents. Our attitudes, for the most part, end up dictating our relationships with people (including ourselves,) places, things, concepts and ideas, our world at large, and the ultimate outcome of our lives.
Think about this. We all came into this world like a blank sheet of paper, with no knowledge and no beliefs about the world we find ourselves now living in. Everything we believe today to be correct and true is a result of a lifetime of situations we have experienced, and lessons we have learned.
From that lifetime bank of gathered information we develop ‘belief systems’ or patterns of beliefs that are individual to each human. Needless to say, many people believe that their ‘belief systems’ are the only ones that are correct.
As direct outgrowths from these belief systems come personal attitudes. Those are simply an individual’s patterned methods of viewing, understanding, and relating to the world, other people, life, and all its circumstances.
Attitudes can kill.
Attitudes of hatred, bigotry, contention, and intolerance have spawned and may again spawn global warfare. In a smaller and more personal perspective, those attitudes breed inner warfare, quashed potential, perpetual discontent and ultimate failure for the person whose life is dictated by them.
On the other hand, attitudes of tolerance, acceptance, patience and cooperation can and usually do foster great achievement, as well as numerous and varied definitions of the word success. A life that surrounds these positive attitudes will invariably breed harmony, contentment, peace of mind, productive relationships with self and others, and the potential for personal achievement on many levels.
Your attitudes can make or break your business.
Most businesses, over time, will develop a character, almost a persona if you will, that directly reflects the personality and attitudes of whomever is at the helm. Whatever image that may be overtly displayed is of little significance. The real and underlying business attitude can be ‘felt’ by customers and clients. Major corporations waste untold billions of dollars annually on public relations advertising, specifically to overcome a public perception that labels them as greedy and heartless.
Your Attitudes Have YOU.
The final result of any life endeavor will unfold in a direct relation to the beliefs and attitudes that you inject. Fortunately, the power to choose in this aspect of life has been freely granted to all of humankind. What one believes will ultimately become their reality. Their attitudes will make it so.
William James, widely regarded as one of the founders of modern psychology said, “The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind.”
