Blue Screen On Startup Woes

Reader Question:

Hi Carey,

I’ve got a problem with my win98se; hope you can enlighten me– every time I boot up windows the OS goes to the blue harddisk scan screen indicating that I’ve not shut down the PC properly. I’m pretty sure the PC is properly shut down after each use. What could I do to rectify this? Do I need to reinstall windows?

Carey’s Answer:

Microsoft posted a fix for this several years ago. You should visit the Windows Update web-site and download all available critical and recommended updates from www.windowsupdate.com.

If you want to try to do this one fix manually, follow these steps: Click Start, click Run and type MSCONFIG (hit enter). Click Advanced. Place a check mark in the box next to “Disable fast shutdown.” (NOTE: If the box is already marked, click Cancel and go to Windows Update!) Click OK, then OK again.

Hope this helps!
