Blog News Round Up

Here’s a round up of blog related and other interesting tidbits I picked up over the last few days ….

  1. FeedBurner analyzed RSS reader market share by looking at how several hundred of its most popular feeds are accessed. Bloglines blew all others away by a significant margin. To me, this demonstrates the “quiet power” Bloglines has. It’s an emerging giant. If you’re a Bloglines subscriber, pay attention to the number of readers a blog feed has. It’s a fair indicator of a blog’s relative reach.
  2. Students, faculty and librarians at Georgia State University developed a blog to deliver information about library news, services and resources called Science News. They followed this with an article that summarizes their rationale for moving to a blog format, how the technology was balanced with the needs of the librarians and patrons, and the issues and challenges that are being addressed to ensure that this will be a viable and successful newsdelivery system.
  3. T. Scott Gross and BIGresearch, authors of a new book called “When Customers Talk,” have launched a companion blog. The book is taken from the responses of over 100,000 shoppers who participated in BIGresearch surveys. The blog will continually provide updated consumer insights and allow marketers to share their ideas and experiences in a unique learning environment driven by the comments of their most valuable asset — their customers.
  4. Wired News reports that Wikipedia has grown to such an extent that it is sometimes mentioned as an alternative to other resources. But with that growth, questions about how credible Wikipedia is, whether it can be respected by the academic community and how it might change are more important than ever. Many wonder if the project can stay true to its core principles of openness and co-creation.
  5. The folks behind the Blog Catalog have launched a new site that tracks blogosphere news.

Steve Rubel is a PR strategist with nearly 16 years of public relations, marketing, journalism and communications experience. He currently serves as a Senior Vice President with Edelman, the largest independent global PR firm.

He authors the Micro Persuasion weblog, which tracks how blogs and participatory journalism are changing the public relations practice.
