Apple Strikes Back at iTunes Hack

Apple Computer has “closed” (cough) a security hole that allows users to download mp3s from the iTunes Music Store and purchase songs stripped of antipiracy protections …

according to a post on the subterrain.net blog. The poster goes on to say:

PyMusique emerged online last week as a copy protection-free interface into the popular iTunes store. One of the creators is Jon Johansen, the notorious Norwegian programmer responsible for releasing DVD-copying software in 1999. Apple released a statement Monday saying the problem had been fixed (sic), and that some iTunes customers would need to upgrade their software. “The security hole in the iTunes Music Store which was recently exploited has been closed, and as a consequence the iTunes Music Store will now sell music only to customers using iTunes version 4.7,” the company said in a statement.”

iTunes AAC Format Hacked

Norwegian programmer Jon Johansen, aka “DVD Jon,” who famously broke the anti-copying technology on DVD discs several years ago, has now released software that enables downloading of songs from Apple’s iTunes Store without any added copyright protections. Users of the “PyMusique” software first have to purchase the songs from iTunes, but when downloaded they arrive in the unprotected AAC format instead of Apple’s protected FairPlay digital rights management software. Apple says it has blocked the PyMusique “security hole,” and that 15% of iTunes users will need to upgrade their software in order to maintain the ability to purchase songs from the store.

The hack can be found here.

An Apple spokesperson would not comment on whether the company is going to pursue legal action.
