Apple Gets Peeled on Batteries

Apple announced a recall of 128,000 batteries in their G4 Ibook and PowerBook computers released in the last 8 months. The problem stem from a possible fire hazard. This makes the second recall of Apple batteries in the last 12 months.

Apparently, an internal short in the batteries is causing them to overheat and Apple has received a half dozen reports of these occurrences, two of them in the U.S.

The computers affected include the 12-inch iBook G4, the 12-inch PowerBook G4 and the 15-inch PowerBook G4. People having bought these products in the last 12 months need to contact Apple get a replacement battery.

12-inch iBook G4 – A1061 – HQ441 – HQ507

12-inch PowerBook G4 – A1079 – 3X446 – 3X510

15-inch PowerBook G4 – A1078 – 3X446 – 3X509

The lithium batteries run for about $130. The same South Korean firm that made the 28,000 batteries recalled last summer made this bad batch of batteries too.
