AOL Ad Asks Is Net Good Or Bad?

The UK version of AOL has presented a discussion site about the Internet, with a pair of videos detailing points for both sides of the good/bad argument, and invites visitors to share their views.

Charitable fundraising and identity theft both exist online. So do issues on either side of the discussion AOL presented on its /discuss pages in the United Kingdom.

AOL produced two videos, with accompanying transcripts, indicating the points made to argue each side. An online vote showed an 80-20 split in favor of the Internet being a good thing. It’s hard to imagine Internet users voting that the Net is bad.

The ‘bad’ video has been running on British television as an advertisement, an article on Prison Planet noted, and claimed the ‘good’ video was added later.

The ads do what advertising campaigns desire to accomplish: make an impression and get people to talk about them. The videos may suggest that the Internet will either extinguish the flame of humanity from the planet or bring people closer together to make the world a better place.

Both videos avoid mentioning the main function of the Internet, which is a tool for communication. Some usages of a tool work out better than others. That’s not as interesting to discuss as good and bad, though.
