AMD Launches Updated Opteron Processors

Advanced Micro Devices, chief competitor to Intel, yesterday announced the release of new Opteron processor chips, designed to be used in server environments.

According to AMD, the new processors represent “world’s highest performing processors for one-way to eight-way x86 servers and workstations.” The new Opteron family of chips run at 2.6 GHz. The models, 852, 252, and 152, are featured in 1000-unit tray quantities.

Marty Seyer, corporate vice president and general manager of the Microprocessor Business Unit, Computation Products Group, AMD, said…

“Since the launch of the AMD Opteron processor, AMD has led the industry with flawless execution on enterprise products and we take great pride in the strong endorsements from our enterprise customers. These models of the AMD Opteron processor with Direct Connect Architecture bring the newest level of performance to our customers. The platforms our partners launched today feature the world’s highest performing 4P and 2P processors for 32- and 64-bit computing.”

To “celebrate” the new Opterons, HP announced a new line-up of blade servers which will feature the AMD processors. According to PC Pro:

HP has announced that a new range of blade servers and workstations will be based around the AMD Opteron. The company also announced a new range of Opteron based Proliant servers which remain the biggest selling x86 based servers in the world. HP already launched a range of Opteron based Proliants last year.

Seyer also had positive comments about the HP/AMD agreement…

“We salute HP’s leadership in providing the broadest portfolio of AMD Opteron processor-based platforms in the industry, helping to advance performance across the enterprise – from the data center and compute-intensive environments to sophisticated design and simulation applications. Today’s announcement from HP is a true milestone for enterprise customers who demand the industry’s most power-efficient and high-performing servers and workstations.”
