A9 chief executive Udi Manber has ditched Amazon’s search engine subsidiary in favor of a position with Google as a vice president of engineering.
AP reported on the latest high-profile tech hire for Google. An Amazon spokesperson said in the story Manber’s last day at A9 would be Friday. Google did not provide any details about Manber’s new duties or start date.
Search expert John Battelle called Manber “one of the leading lights in the search world, on nearly everyone’s “Top Brains in Search” list.”
Amazon quickly moved to fill the position, issuing a statement naming Dr. David Tennenhouse the new CEO. Tennenhouse formerly toiled at Intel as VP of the Corporate Technology Group and Director of Research.
He also previously served as Director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which many years ago began a networking project that we now know as the Internet. Vint Cerf worked on developing Internet Protocol while at DARPA; he joined Google last year from MCI and recently gave testimony before a Senate committee on network neutrality.
Google has been picking other companies clean of some of their top talent. They victimized Microsoft a couple of times, hiring executives Mark Lucovsky and Kai-Fu Lee away from Redmond. Lee’s hiring so angered Microsoft they sued Google and asked the court to enforce Lee’s one-year non-compete agreement. That case eventually settled out of court.
