Facebook Tops US Visits on Christmas: A New Trend or Seasonal Spike?

A New Holiday Tradition?

Recent data from Hitwise indicates a possible shift in holiday traditions. Instead of gathering around a fireplace with family, many might have opted for the blue glow of their devices, connecting through Facebook. Facebook, it seems, achieved a significant milestone. For the first time, it became the most-visited US site on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, as per a tweet from Hitwise_US.

Not a Sign of the Apocalypse

Though Facebook’s rise in visits suggests a change in the way people connect during the holidays, it doesn’t necessarily imply a move away from face-to-face interactions. Facebook merely offers a channel for connecting with distant friends and relatives. Indeed, many could have used the platform in their free moments, after holiday gatherings.

Competition Left Behind

What’s striking is how Facebook’s holiday visits surpassed those of several retail sites, all of which also witnessed seasonal traffic highs. Even the likes of Yahoo, Yahoo Mail, and Google lagged behind the social media giant.

Privacy Concerns Pushed Aside?

Facebook’s achievement becomes all the more notable in light of recent events. The site had recently undergone a somewhat controversial revamp of its privacy settings. Despite the uproar, it seems users weren’t deterred.

A Glimpse into the Future?

It raises the question: will Facebook maintain this extraordinary traffic influx? Or, will the trend dissipate as people resume their routines, returning to schools and workplaces?
