Natural Language Processing: A Historical Perspective

When considering intelligent systems, language comprehension capabilities become critical. This belief formed a foundational principle for many early scientists in the field, leading to revolutionary natural language processing experiments such as ELIZA and SHRDLU.

Exploring Early Experiments: ELIZA and SHRDLU

Developed by Joseph Weizenbaum from MIT in collaboration with Stanford University psychiatrist Kenneth Colby, ELIZA became one of the earliest recognized applications in this field. Its design mimicked a Carl Rogers School psychiatrist’s responses, using pattern matching to emulate human interaction.

Another pioneering program, SHRDLU, crafted by Terry Winograd, was named after frequently used letters in English on linotype machines. The program responded in a simplified conversation format, providing minimal original contribution to the dialogue. It was aimed to encourage users to reveal their true feelings, much like a psychoanalyst’s role.

Emergence of Emotional Robots: Cog, Kismet, and Paro

In the recent past, MIT has developed robots like Cog, Kismet and Paro, designed to emulate human emotions and elicit emotional responses from their human counterparts. Sherry Turkle’s research into relationships formed with these “relational artifacts” highlights the potential need for redefining human-robot interactions.

Progress in Speech Recognition: HEARSAY and HWIM

Continuing progress in NLP was marked by the ambitious speech recognition program, HEARSAY, which employed a blackboard architecture to facilitate communication between different language components. Following this, the HWIM (Hear What I Mean) Project attempted to understand spoken language through augmented transition networks, although its ambitious scope limited its success compared to HEARSAY II.

Importance of Parsing and World Knowledge

Parsing and world knowledge were fundamental to the success of early language processing systems. For instance, SHRDLU used a context-free grammar to parse English commands, while HEARSAY and HWIM incorporated knowledge about the world in their responses.

Evolution and Future of NLP

The future of NLP has seen the advent of statistical approaches to govern parse trees for sentences, as explained by Eugene Charniak. Probabilistic rules obtained from the Penn Treebank and techniques such as Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), Long Short-Term Memory units (LSTMs), bidirectional LSTMs and Transformers have brought us closer to solving NLP tasks. Today, powerful open-source systems like BERT promise to further accelerate this field’s development.
