AI Deployed to Combat Wildfires in California

As wildfires in California grow increasingly unpredictable, state firefighters are turning to a novel approach. They’re using artificial intelligence (AI) to help spot fires at their earliest stages, giving them a much-needed upper hand.

AI to the Rescue Fighting Wildfires

Traditionally, detecting wildfires in remote and rural regions has relied on residents’ calls. However, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) and UC San Diego’s AlertCalifornia network have developed an innovative solution: an AI fire-detection tool.

This AI tool can differentiate smoke from other air particles in real-time video footage, such as smog or mist. The tool scans over 1,000 high-definition camera feeds, including 199 Cal Fire-sponsored cameras. It then notifies first responders and regional emergency command centers about potential threats, bolstering the human surveillance network.

How it Works

Cal Fire’s Battalion Chief Issac Sanchez is optimistic that the tool will significantly reduce response times. By automating fire detection, the system can bypass the variable response times associated with human-based detection methods.

The camera network, available for public viewing on the AlertCalifornia website, includes features such as:

  • 1,032 high-definition cameras
  • Near-infrared night vision
  • 24-hour surveillance
  • 360-degree panning capability
  • 60-mile views on clear days and 120-mile views on clear nights

In addition to the AI detection tool, other technologies predict wildfire direction using data on topography and wind speed.

Investment in the Future

The state fire service is pouring substantial resources into this program. Cal Fire has already invested over $20 million over the past four years, with a commitment of at least $3.5 million more.

This initial trial aims to validate the potential of AI technology in wildfire prevention, detection, and response. If successful in the six focus areas, the tool could expand to other parts of the state and eventually nationwide.

With the AI tool trial, California firefighters are opening a new chapter in fighting wildfires. By integrating advanced technologies, the state is inching closer to a future where AI is deeply entrenched in the process of battling wildfires.
