FraudGPT: AI Tool For Cybercriminals

Share

In the digital underworld of cybercrime, threat actors are constantly seeking innovative tools to exploit vulnerabilities. The latest weapon is an artificial intelligence (AI) tool called FraudGPT. Netenrich security researcher, Rakesh Krishnan, reported that this AI bot is targeted for offensive use, including spear phishing, crafting cracking tools, and carding.

FraudGPT: A Sinister Spin on GPT

Advertised on various dark web marketplaces and Telegram channels, FraudGPT represents a dangerous trend in cybercrime. Following the path laid by its predecessor, WormGPT, this AI tool has been in circulation since July 22, 2023. Its subscription cost is set at $200 a month, with options for six-month and yearly subscriptions.

The author, an actor known as CanadianKingpin, promotes FraudGPT as a viable ChatGPT alternative. The tool offers a broad range of offensive tools and features, with the potential to craft malicious code, create undetectable malware, and find leaks and vulnerabilities. Since its launch, the tool boasts over 3,000 confirmed sales and reviews.

The Risk: Phishing-as-a-Service (PhaaS)

The advent of AI tools like FraudGPT enables threat actors to concoct new adversarial AI variants specifically engineered to promote cybercrime. These tools take the phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) model to new heights. For novice actors, these tools could serve as a launchpad for convincing phishing and business email compromise (BEC) attacks, leading to stolen sensitive information and unauthorized wire payments.

Protecting Against AI-Enhanced Threats

While organizations can create AI tools like ChatGPT with ethical safeguards, Krishnan points out that reimplementation without these safeguards isn’t a daunting task for cybercriminals. For organizations, implementing a defense-in-depth strategy with all the available security telemetry for fast analytics is critical in detecting and mitigating these fast-moving threats.

Stay One Step Ahead of Cyber Threats

In the world of cybersecurity, staying ahead of cyber threats is crucial. As AI tools like FraudGPT continue to emerge, organizations must remain vigilant and proactive in their defense strategies. By implementing robust security measures and staying informed about the latest threats, your organization can better fend off cybercriminals.
