Today, Common Sense Media, the leading national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing trustworthy information, education, and independent voice, announced an exciting step toward assessing the impact of AI on our youngest generation. Plans have been set in motion to develop an in-depth AI ratings and reviews system.
Parents Demand for AI Ratings
According to a recent poll conducted by Common Sense Media in partnership with Impact Research, an overwhelming 82% of parents voiced a desire for a system to help them rate the quality and appropriateness of AI products, like ChatGPT, for their children. Interestingly, 77% of these parents expressed interest in AI-powered education tools to facilitate their child’s learning. However, only 40% were aware of reliable sources where they could learn about the suitability of AI products for children.
A Call to Action for Responsible AI
James P. Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, stressed the urgency to inform and equip parents, educators, and youngsters about the potential risks and benefits of AI products. Reflecting on the rise of social media and the subsequent lack of regulation, he highlighted the need to learn from the past and ensure responsible and regulated use of AI, a technology with far-reaching implications for children and society at large.
An Independent, Expert-Backed AI Rating System
The AI ratings and reviews system proposed by Common Sense Media is developed with insights from leading experts in the field of AI. The ratings will not only offer guidance to the public but also support new legislative and regulatory initiatives aimed at keeping children safe online and advocating for increased transparency with these emerging products.
Steyer stated, “Lawmakers and regulators need an independent and highly respected third-party partner like Common Sense to ensure that they have trusted information to protect the public. We look forward to continuing to play this critical role with AI and other emerging technologies, just as we have done for years with media and other digital products.”
