West Wing Writer Looks into Facebook the Movie

Share

Aaron Sorkin is a television and film writer/producer. He also acts (roles include: Man in Bar, Man at Bar, Aide in Bar, and Man in Crowd). You’re probably more familiar with his writer/producer status. He worked on The West Wing, Sports Night,  and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. He also wrote Charlie Wilson’s War and A Few Good Men.

Now Sorkin is looking to tackle the social networking universe. Well, Facebook at least. Sony Pictures along with producer Scott Rudin has tapped him to do so. His first course of action was to figure out what Facebook actually is. Sounds like the perfect guy for the job.

He has just started a Facebook Group about the potential movie. On it he says, “I honestly don’t know how this works, which is why I’m here. If anyone has any questions I’d be happy to answer them as best I can. If anyone has any comments I’m glad to listen. And if anyone has any Facebook stories I think they might be helpful.”

Oh well, the movie’s probably going to have to include a fair bit of fiction to be  truly entertaining. Although, this is not the first time the concept has appealed to hollywood executives.

Apparently a lot of people think Facebook’s story is interesting enough to make a movie about. A spokeswoman for Facebook told the LA Times, “We are routinely approached by writers and filmmakers interested in telling the Facebook story or the stories of the more than 100 million people who use Facebook to share and make the world more open and connected. At this point, we have not agreed to cooperate with any film project, but we are flattered by the interest.”

So they’re looking to make a movie about Facebook with a writer that’s never used it, and Facebook hasn’t agreed to allow it. There’s no telling when, and even IF this movie will be made. Still, fans remain optimistic. “Most people probably expected a Facebook movie to be a throwaway teeny bopper sex romp but with Sorkin behind it, this thing could actually be good. Wow, that’s a little scary,” writes JoBlo.com.

If it doesn’t work out for Sorkin to make the movie, maybe they can go the “vs.” route with MySpace. I can’t imagine it being any worse than “Alien vs. Predator”, and that did well enough for them to make a sequel.
