About 62 million people should now find it rather easier (or perhaps, for the first time, possible) to use Twitter. Last night, Twitter acknowledged the world’s Italian-speaking population by announcing support for the Italian language.
Twitter first moved beyond English by launching in Japanese in April of 2008. More recently, it’s added support for Spanish and French. Obviously, every time Twitter does something along these lines, it allows for the possibility of adding a lot more users.
The Italian expansion looks ready to get off to a good start, too. A post on the Twitter Blog (written in Italian, of course), noted that journalist Beppe Severgnini, radio station Radio Deejay, and singer Laura Pausini have all established Twitter accounts.
What’s more, according to a slightly shaky translation provided by Google, Twitter’s Jenna Dawn wrote on the corporate blog, “Our friends @ pizzatwit will be happy to organize a pizza party and if you want to meet lots of new friends and Twitt all night, you should follow their account and help them to organize one of their famous Twitter Pizza Party!”
Anyway, the next language Twitter supports is almost sure to be German, since Biz Stone wrote about FIGS (French, Italian, German, Spanish) back in October.
