Tis the season for top ten lists and year-in-review reporting. Not to be left out, AOL released an extensive list of Internet chart-toppers, this one focusing on mobile search and Web video in addition to top overall searches.
Just like with Yahoo’s release of top searches, Britney Spears was at the top of the collective mind, again. Britney Spears has topped the most-search-for lists seven out of the last eight years. Other celebrities following in Britney’s choreographed footsteps were Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian, Paris Hilton, and Oprah Winfrey.
“What people are searching for online is a strong reflection of what’s captivating their attention offline and throughout their daily lives,” said John Kannapell, Senior Vice President of AOL Search. “While the economy and the elections grabbed the majority of headlines and consumers’ mindshare this year, America’s continuing obsession with celebrities and pop culture were also clearly evident across Web, mobile and video searches.”
Outside the celebrity realm, Barack Obama was the name to beat, topping AOL’s newsmaker category. Sarah Palin was the second top newsmaker, followed by the so-called pregnant man (let’s be honest, not a man), Hillary Clinton, and John McCain.
Especially interesting were AOL’s top mobile searches and viral video searches, offering some unique insight into what users on the go are looking for, and what types of videos grab their attention.
