The Google Algorithm, According To Fishkin

No one in the public sphere knows much about the Google algorithm, and the company undoubtedly plans to keep things that way. SEO expert Rand Fishkin made an educated guess, though, and attempted “to write out a rough outline of what the formula might look like.”

Anyone and everyone interested in search engine optimization would do well to take a peek. Internet marketing consultant Todd Malicoat gave the “randfish theorem” his stamp of approval, and described the post as “beautiful in its brevity.”

“Print it out and memorize it, and cater all your decisions around it,” Malicoat continued. “Rand has simplified his incredible search engine ranking factors paper (which I refer people to probably a dozen times per week). The Google algo IS complex, but there are some parts that are much more important than others. Create a strategy considering these google ranking criteria, and you’ll be well on your way to good rankings.”

Fishkin’s work is generating a lot of conversation, and a lot of compliments, in spite of the disclaimer he attached. “Obviously, this isn’t a perfect summation of the algorithm by any means,” Fishkin wrote, “but I have a strong suspicion that if we were to see the exact algorithm in perfect form, we’d see that a lot of these factors are strongly reflected in the weighting.”

SteveT” was one of many who responded to Fishkin’s post, and he applauded the effort. Steve was also the first to apply the term “randfish theorem.” Fishkin’s modesty aside, his “little piece of the Google algorithm – revealed” is a very insightful and useful bit of work.
