Sony Ericsson Introduces Bluetooth Camera

The CeBit conference appears to be rivaling E3 in terms of its “cool factor”. A number of technological companies have taken this opportunity to reveal upcoming gadgets and campaigns.

One such company making the most of CeBit is Sony Ericsson, Sony’s mobile phone brand. Yesterday, Sony Ericsson introduced am innovative first’ for Bluetooth technology, a Bluetooth remote control, mobile camera phone, ROB-1. In this case, mobile doesn’t just refer to the type of technology, it means ROB-1 can move around, via remote control and capture images.

According to Sony Ericsson’s release:

ROB-1 can move forwards, backwards, look around corners, pivot on the spot or tilt the camera 70 degrees upwards and 20 degrees downwards. An ultra bright light on the front leads the way and allows shots to be taken in dark spaces. Ample onboard memory enables you to snap away for some time before either storing pictures in your phone, or transferring them to a PC via the supplied USB cable.

Ulf Persson, Corporate Vice President and Head of Accessories for Sony Ericsson had these thoughts about ROB-1’s potential: “This is a great gadget for people who really like testing the latest technology first hand and having fun with new applications. Just like the Sony Ericsson Bluetooth Car which appealed to a wide range of gadget fans, we believe that ROB-1 will become the must have’ Bluetooth gadget to show off to friends and family.”

Sony made no indication as to whether or not ROB-1 would be limited by which phones can control it. The impression is, as long as a mobile unit has Bluetooth capabilities, it can control ROB.

Expect the camera to appear on shelves during the 3rd quarter of 2005.
