The Power of Everyday Choices: From Glen Ridge to Hollywood

Share

Every day we’re faced with an abundance of choices, from the mundane to the critical. Each decision, no matter how minor, can be the start of a path to incredible outcomes. But what can we learn from one Glen Ridge student’s remarkable journey from high school wrestling to Hollywood stardom?

Decisions in Our Daily Lives

Consider how many choices you make each day. Decision-making is an inherent part of our lives, from choosing to snooze our alarms to picking what to wear. We often underestimate the power of these everyday decisions.

A Fateful Injury Leads to an Unexpected Turn

Glen Ridge High School’s Class of 1980 stood out not just in size but in its vibrant student life. Among its students was Tom Mapother, an exemplary student known for his smarts, looks, and sporting prowess. But a wrestling injury during his Junior Year opened up an unexpected opportunity. Encouraged by his coach, Tom chose to audition for the annual Junior Class Play, “Guys and Dolls”.

The Birth of a Star: Tom Cruise’s Choices

Rather than shy away from the unfamiliar, Tom embraced the chance, landing the lead role and discovering a passion for acting. Living near Manhattan presented Tom with ample acting opportunities, landing him a minor role in “Endless Love”, followed by a more notable role in “Taps”. His decision to immerse himself fully in each part drew Hollywood’s attention.

His choice to give his all, even in minor roles, propelled him to fame. After “Risky Business”, Tom Mapother transformed into the superstar we know today as Tom Cruise. This passion for choice and action extended to his later works, from performing his stunts in “Mission Impossible II” to earning an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in “Magnolia”.

The Cumulative Impact of Our Choices

Reflecting on Tom’s journey makes us ponder our decisions. How will today’s choices affect tomorrow or the years ahead? Even if they seem inconsequential, give them thought. As Theodore Roosevelt wisely said, taking no action is the worst decision you can make.

Choosing to Take Action

Each decision you make has the power to alter your life’s trajectory. Embrace them. Recognize their potential. Live with intention, and always remember, every choice can be the start of something extraordinary.
