What is happiness?
I remember many different times in my life when I have tried to answer that question–both for myself and for the people I have worked with in seminars and workshops.
It’s not a simple question to answer.
After all, what makes one person happy may not make another. What makes you happy today may not be the thing that makes you happy tomorrow.
Over the years my definition of happiness has become less and less specific. I no longer use things like “the perfect spouse”, “a wonderful job”, “happy children”. While each of these might give you a measure of happiness, they all just one facet of life.
After several years I have come up with a definition that I think works pretty well: Happiness is having more than enough in each area of life.
We are happy when we have more than enough faith, family, and friends. When we have more than enough health and wealth. When we have more than enough mental capacity and more than enough physical strength.
More than enough.
Today you can increase your eventual happiness by taking steps to either increase the reserve you have in every area of life or decrease the demands. Saving more and using less–not just financially but in every area of life.
Whether you have more than enough 5, 10 or 20 years from now will depend on the choices you make today.
Choose the path that will provide you more than enough.
