AMID INTENSE COMPETITION WITH SEARCH engine Google, Yahoo! yesterday said it will soon enlarge the size of its users’ mail storage spaces from 250 megabytes to one gigabyte. The change, expected by late April, will allow users to store four times more e-mail on their Yahoo! Mail accounts. Analysts believe the improvement is Yahoo!’s response to Google’s move last spring to offer one gigabyte of free storage to users of its Gmail service. “What Google’s Gmail has done is to kill any hope MSN or Yahoo! may have had of getting users to pay for mail storage,” Kelsey Group analyst Greg Sterling said.
[San Francisco | Reuters News Service, 24 March 2005] – Yahoo said yesterday it will soon begin giving users of its free Web e-mail service 1GB of storage, four times more than it now offers, amid intense competition. Consumers are increasingly using their Web e-mail inboxes as a repository for e-mail as well as digital photos and documents. Web e-mail providers have been responding with offers of ever more free storage. Yahoo, which Nielsen//NetRatings said in February boasted the most unique users among e-mail providers in the US ahead of Time Warner’s AOL and Microsoft’s MSN Hotmail, said the global storage upgrade will begin in late April and take about two weeks to complete.
SUNNYVALE, Calif. (AP) – Yahoo Inc. is quadrupling the amount of storage provided with its free e-mail accounts and upgrading its desktop search software in its ongoing duel with rivals Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. Yahoo said late Tuesday that it will provide 1G byte of storage for each free e-mail account. The current limit is 250M bytes. The expanded storage will be available in mid-April, said Brad Garlinghouse, Yahoo’s vice president of communications products. The Sunnyvale-based company also is expanding the reach of its desktop software, a test product designed to find material stored on computer hard drives. Yahoo’s software, licensed from X1 Technologies, will now index content from e-mail address books and discussions in Yahoo’s instant messaging service. The expanded e-mail storage enables Yahoo to catch up with online search engine leader Google, which offers an invitation-only service that has been offering 1G byte of storage for nearly a year.
