Just A Little Less Firefox In January

Share

The New Year started for the Mozilla Foundation’s Firefox browser as it did for a lot of people, with a little bit of an unsteady step backwards.

“…so the bartender said ‘yeah, he’s pretty amazing, but the stupid genie didn’t hear me right, I mean, why the heck would anyone want a 12-inch pianist?’…”

The month of January went over about as well for Firefox as that joke did on New Year’s Eve, with just a little groan. The 14 percent market share Net Applications said Firefox held in the browser market in December gave up a third of a percent in January.

It’s a minor blip for the major Internet browser that doesn’t come from Microsoft. In June 2006, Firefox had a small misstep, which was blamed on summer vacations and people spending time in the big blue room with the high ceilings instead of in cramped cubicles or dorm rooms.

Microsoft enjoyed a little upward Internet Explorer movement, 0.11 percent to 79.75. The other gainer came from Apple, whose Safari browser racked up a sixth straight monthly uptick in browser share to 4.70 percent.

With no Windows Vista consumer machines or OS upgrades available for holiday shoppers, maybe people opted for the joys of Macs. That could account for a few more people making Safari their browser of choice, instead of IE on a new Vista machine.

If that’s the case, this guy should be pretty happy about that. Namaste, everyone.
