Internet Explorer 7 Released By Yahoo?

Share

Yahoo has posted the finalized version of Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 and made the software available for download today. As of yet, Microsoft has not officially released the web browser to the public.

So let me see if I understand this correctly.

Yahoo is releasing Internet Explorer 7 before Microsoft makes it available?

Perhaps the term “miscommunication” would be a bit too obvious.

Admittedly, Microsoft had hyped the new browser’s customization options, citing Yahoo’s added features as a primary example. I guess they liked Yahoo’s work so much they decided to let them release the software to the masses.

Incidentally, Yahoo’s version of the browser comes pre-packed with the Yahoo toolbar, a number of its sites listed as favorites, and Yahoo set as the default search engine.

Last week, Microsoft announced plans to roll out the new software in automatic updates slated to take place in the coming weeks. Apparently, Yahoo’s trigger finger got a little itchy.

Users can, however, install IE7 without the Yahoo features according to an anonymous blogger:

It does install the Yahoo extras, but if you do not use them or wish to have them intergrated into IE7, you can use a program like WinRAR to extract the files from the downloaded exe file. If you have WinRAR installed, just right click the exe file, go to Extract Files and choose a temp folder of your choice. Then, just run the IE7-Setup.exe file. It will remove any previous versions requiring a restart to finish the installation.
According to the CNET report, a Microsoft representative declined to comment on the release of its new browser by Yahoo.

I eagerly wait Steve Ballmer’s take on all this. Perhaps he’ll throw around some more chairs, or even a credenza this time.

If I were Google CEO Eric Schmidt, I would be grinning from ear to ear right about now.
