Hitwise Examines Search Share Of Gadgets

Hitwise has released search data that takes a look at what will be the most popular consumer electronics for the upcoming holiday season.

The Nintendo Wii was the most searched for gaming console in the UK, ranking as the sixth most popular gadget going into the holiday season, ahead of the Xbox 360 at number 7 and the Ninetendo DS at number 8. There were 5 times as many searches for the Nintendo Wii as the Sony Playstation 3, which did not make the top 10-gadget list.

Mobile phones proved to be the most popular gadgets in the UK, as they received 46 percent of all searches, followed by computers, which garnered 34 percent of searches. The iPod captured 6 percent of all searches in the consumer electronics category, trailed by satellite navigation, which had 3 percent, and high definition TV with 2 percent.

The top mobile phones by model in the UK included the Nokia N95, which had 9. 4 percent of all searches, followed by the Nokia 6300 with 8.7 percent of searches, and the Samsung g600 with 8. 5 percent.

The most popular mobile phone manufacturer by share of UK Internet searches was Nokia, which had 35 percent of searches across the top 5 brands, trailed by Sony Ericsson with 29 percent and Samsung with 24 percent. Motorola was at number 4 with a 6 percent share, followed by LG with 5 percent.

Hitwise’s methodology consisted of analyzing the top 2,000 search terms that brought traffic to a Hitwise Custom category made up of the top 100 online retail sites in the UK during the four weeks ending September 22 2007.
