Google Further Customizes the News Experience

Google has launched a new Google News feature called the Custom Sections Directory. This is a page where users can go to find and create customized sections covering narrower topics to put on their Google News homepages or share with other users.

“One of the great things about online news is the ability to filter by topics,” Google says. “Google News has long recognized this so we’ve allowed users to track articles based on keywords of their choice. But it has been a little tricky at times. For example, to follow news about topics related to outer space, you would have to create a pretty complex filter.”

“Now, if you’re using Google News and can’t find the perfect section, just create your own! You can do that by adding the relevant keywords,” Google adds. “Then, if you are happy with the resulting section, you can publish it to a directory so others can benefit.”

There are already 26 pages of custom sections in the directory. Topics are as diverse as Food Safety, Asian Business News, Brain Science, Lindsay Lohan, and Fashion.

Right now, Google News users in Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States can use the feature, but Google says it plans to expand it soon. More information on how to create and subscribe to custom sections can be found here.
