Google Apps Takes Swipe At Microsoft

Not everyone likes change, and complaints are especially sure to occur when changes are forced upon people.  So a certain Mountain View-based search giant, while still pushing its products as replacements for Redmond’s offerings, is trying to bridge the gap with Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook.

A post on the Official Google Enterprise Blog details how late adopters are being looked out for: Google Apps Sync “lets you use Microsoft Outlook seamlessly with Google Apps Premier or Education Editions.”  Email, contact, and calendar info is all included.  Plus, individuals “can always use Gmail’s web interface to access their information when they’re not on their work computer,” too.

So, as explained in the above video, companies can benefit from the cost savings and flexibility associated with Google Apps while not flustering their employees.  Which may not sound like a huge deal, but in tests, even people within high-tech organizations like Genentech and Avago took advantage of the in-your-own-time option.

Other new Google Apps Sync customers include the Morgans Hotel Group (with 1,750 employees), Johnson Diversey (with 12,000 employees), and Netfirms (which powers 1.2 million sites); Google appears to be courting some rather large companies with this plug-in.

It should be interesting to see if Microsoft responds.
