A South African Search Engine

Share

There are many articles being published about the likes of Google, in fact most articles are about Google.

We read about the complex and ever changing business rules that change site ranking, or the ability to have your site ranked at all.

There are many companies who specialise in SEO trying to get sites exposed to their clients.

All this news is getting boring, if the search engine does not work for you, use one that does and tell your friends!

Living in Africa, South Africa to be more specific we find that the major search engines do very little for our market needs. Only about 10% of local sites appear in the big 5! Here in Africa the big 5 are wild game, and no, they do not roam the streets!

In light of what the international search engines do not do for us we have decided to ‘roll’ our own.

clipps is the largest, South African, human-edited directory on the web. We rely on our local resources to help us update our information so that we continue having valid and reliable links on our site. Our vision is to be the best service directory and search engine in South Africa. We also retrieve some of our information from DMOZ, which is the largest international human edited directory on the web. Our goal is to feedback our updates to DMOZ.

  • there are about 40 million people in SA
  • about 1 in 15 people in SA have Internet access – that is about 2,6 million people
  • there are around 161,000 registered .co.za websites
  • only about 16,000 of these sites appear in the international search engines!
  • relying on using traditional Internet systems you have less than a 10% chance of your web site being found
  • if you do not have a web site and relying on paper based directories you have an even smaller chance of being found
  • We have recognised that it is important for South African web sites to appear in a search engine and thus do not have any business rules that penalize the display or ranking of sites in our search engine.
By learning about the business rules of the major search engines we have developed a local search engine that promotes sites even if the developers do not have the skills to do ideal Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of their sites.

Due to the relatively low number of web sites we have combined the funtionality of a search engine and directory service in a transparent manner to site users. You do not have to many mulitiple searches.

Starting next month we will be running an online workshop about search engine optimization techniques so that you, the local aspiring webby can improve the chance that your site can be found on the Internet.
We have found many very large organization’s professional sites that are poorly constructed i.r.o SEO basics and thus do not receive the exposure that they deserve.

Louis has a wide variety of technical and management experience ranging from mining, printing and publishing , project management to retail systems. This project started as a personal hobby and skills development exercise and grew to live service.
