A 3D Future for YouTube?

Google is testing 3D videos on YouTube. An interesting post in the YouTube Help Center was discovered by Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz, and a Google employee is apparently using his “20% time” to work on the “stereoscopic player”.

There is even a test video (at least one) that is live:

If you go to the video’s page on YouTube, you can check out the following menu for 3D View style, which as you can see, provides a variety of different 3D viewing options:

“Ideally you shouldn’t use left and right. For the best quality make the sources as large as possible within the frame and set yt3d:aspect correctly,” says the Google Employee, who goes by YouTube Pete.

The project is clearly far from finished, but seeing a live example is enough to spark a little excitement from anyone who enjoys watching 3D content. Considering that HD is now an option as well, we might be in for some very cool content on YouTube in the future.

Check out the thread to see everything Pete said on the matter. What do you think?
