Virtual Club Opens With Pussycat Dolls

For most of us (not me, though), virtual reality is the only way you’ll find yourself alone in the VIP room with Pussycat Dolls (PCD) lead hottie Nicole Scherzinger. Interscope Records and Web startup Doppleganger have teamed up to make your teenage fantasies come true – and you don’t even have to be yourself.

Interscope and Doppleganger have set up The Lounge featuring the Pussycat Dolls, a virtual hangout aimed at teams who like clubs, but not awkward rejection in crowded smoke-filled noisy rooms. Rejection can come though the privacy of AOL Instant messaging instead. PCD will drop in from time to time to chat with visitors.

But they’ll be wearing Geek Spray. So don’t expect your suave IM techniques to pay off.

Online visitors to “da club” can take the form of their customized avatar (choice of preppy, hip-hop, or indie), decide on attire and haircut, do “the robot,” and smile at the fake chicks while a live DJ plays music- just like real life, as you realize the DJ’s playing the soundtrack of your miserable geeky life. 😉

“Doppelganger’s single purpose is to create a cool place for folks to hang out and chat online,” said Doppelganger CEO, Andrew Littlefield. “There’s no cover charge, your friends are here, there’s great music, and we never close.”

He forgot a few purposes. Interscope and Doppleganger will be splitting revenue generated from music download sales and other merchandise, as well as billboard advertising space inside the virtual club.

Interscope can also promote its list of recording artists that includes the Pussycat Dolls, currently on tour with the Black-Eyed Peas, and Beck.

“Interscope’s artists have a strong fan base around the world,” said Courtney Holt, Head of New Media and Strategic Marketing for Interscope Records. “We’re really pleased to be able to give fans around the world a place to hang out together online and listen to music. This is an amazing opportunity for Interscope to create a real global community.”

“Getting to work with the PCD has been amazing and we’re really pleased that we can help the band embrace their global fan base,” said Littlefield.

Littlefield hopes The Lounge will be come one of the world’s “largest parties.”

Can somebody get me Scherzinger on the line so she knows where to meet me?
