Plaxo Puts HipCal In Its Pocket

In need of a stronger online calendar solution to go with its address book products, Plaxo has acquired privately held HipCal and will move that team to its Mountain View HQ.

Five Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute graduates have worked on developing HipCal, an online calendar program, for the past year. After collecting accolades from South by Southwest and SEOmoz.org, HipCal collected additional validation of its work – a purchase proposal from Plaxo.

HipCal accepted, and announced the deal today. Co-founder Garret Heaton posted more about the purchase on the company blog:

About two months ago we were contacted by the folks over at Plaxo. They were interested in what we’d done with HipCal and wanted to explore the possibility of joining forces. Sweet.

Plaxo has millions of users, sync technology, and awesome employeeswe couldn’t wait to bring our creative calendar expertise to the table. (toot toot, that was our own horn)

We are now proudly Plaxo employees (including the hippo)! We’ll be starting our cross-country road trip out to Mountain View, California in early June and we’ll be blogging along the way.
Existing HipCal accounts will continue to work as they always have. Heaton noted that the features on HipCal would remain free when it becomes Plaxo Calendar sometime this year.

Plaxo and Time Warner’s (TWX) AOL announced last year the Plaxo tools would be integrated into AOL and AIM to assist with email and buddy list management. Those tools would permit users to have an up-to-date address book available from multiple locations, like home and work PCs.
